We have an incredibly inspiring story to share with you all today. Mia, a Commonwealth athlete living with scoliosis, shows first-hand how it doesn’t haven’t to stop you from achieving your dreams.
“My name is Mia Walker. I am 17 years old and I was diagnosed with scoliosis 4 years ago with a 57 degree curve.
I was told I needed the operation but I was unsure as I love athletics. I was told by my doctor that the chances of me becoming an international athlete were slim as my scoliosis would continue to increase as I grew. He said this would cause me pain and eventually stop me running.
4 years later, I still haven’t had the operation. Despite this, I ran for England 3 times and achieved a silver medal at the Youth Commonwealth Games for the 400m hurdles. Scoliosis hasn’t stopped me from achieving my goals and it shouldn’t stop others.
I do sometimes feel insecure in my body as scoliosis is never portrayed in the media. I used to wear baggier clothes to hide it. However, I hope I’ve proved that having scoliosis doesn’t prevent you from excelling at your talents. It doesn’t define you, it just adds to your story.”
